Coalition Representing More Than 100 Immigrant and Civil Rights Groups Celebrates Historic Voter Turnout, Calls on President-Elect Biden to Fulfill His Pledge to Repeal the Muslim Ban on Day One

NOV. 7, 2020 -- The No Muslim Ban Ever coalition, which powers the largest grassroots campaign to repeal the Muslim and African Ban, welcomes the incoming Biden administration and celebrates this year’s historic voter turnout, which took place against the backdrop of a pandemic and more complicated voting procedures.

“We salute the many Muslim, African, Latinx, and other volunteers, within our coalition and beyond, who helped ensure this year's historic voter turnout by registering voters, encouraging them to vote, and helping them navigate a more complex process in the midst of a national pandemic,” said Subha Varadarajan, No Muslim Ban Ever Legal & Outreach Fellow

Varadarajan added, “People across the country have been rallying at airports and in the streets since President Trump’s first executive order was handed down in January 2017, demanding that the Muslim Ban be repealed in order to reunite families and end the religious profiling of immigrants and other travelers. With this historic mandate from the people, we urge President-Elect Biden to fulfill his campaign promise to repeal the Muslim Ban on day one of his administration as part of a broader commitment to more just and sensible immigration policies.”

The Muslim and African Ban has prevented thousands of U.S. citizens from reuniting with spouses or children currently overseas. Thousands more have been prevented from seeking refuge from violence, accessing medical care, or pursuing careers while contributing to our economy.

The No Muslim Ban Ever coalition also calls on President-Elect Biden to take the following steps as part of a broader effort to enact just immigration policies, an important step in the nation’s healing process:

  • Expand refugee numbers from the countries impacted by the Muslim and African Ban.

  • Reunite families by ordering expedited consideration of visas for those who have been denied under the Muslim and African Ban.

  • Consult with leaders and organizations that work closely with Muslim communities to ensure their rights and priorities are reflected in his administration’s policies.
